The Ephraim Dyer Estate Company was started in 1858, when Ephraim Dyer moved to California to join his brother Ebenezer in
business. Both civil engineers, they bid on government contracts for surveying in California, Nevada, and Arizona. In 1869,
Ephraim Dyer began growing sugar beets and organized the California Beet Sugar Manufacturing Company and the next year built
the first successful beet sugar factory in Alvarado. The Ephraim Dyer Estate Company was also engaged in general mercantile
business, stone-quarrying, shipping, and cattle-raising. The company was dissolved in 1971.
